Documents to keep ready before any UP certificate application

One checklist that covers Domicile, Income, Caste and EWS: assembled once, so a missing paper never costs you a second trip to the Tehsil.

In short

Four certificates, one document set. Identity, address, a residence trail and a photograph are common to all of them; income proof, land records and a family caste record are the extras that only some applications need.

The four everyone needs

• Aadhaar card: the identity document every service checks, and the spelling every other document is matched against.
• Address proof: ration card, electricity bill, water bill or a registered rent agreement in a family member's name.
• A residence trail: anything that shows how long you have lived at the address: a school leaving certificate, land or house records, or older utility bills.
• A recent passport-size photograph: a light background, and taken within the last six months.

Get the scans right the first time

Most portal upload failures are mechanical rather than substantive. Scan in daylight or with a scanner app, keep the whole document inside the frame, save as PDF or JPG, and keep each file under 2 MB. A photograph of a document at an angle, with a shadow across a corner, is the version that comes back.

Check the names match before you start

Lay the documents side by side and read the name on each one. An initial expanded on one and abbreviated on another, a surname spelt two ways, a father's name recorded differently. Each of those is a query waiting to happen. It is far cheaper to correct a document now than to have an application rejected and refiled.
