The annual cycle, when to apply so it covers your admission, and why last year's certificate is refused.
EWS is the shortest-lived of the four certificates, and the one most often presented after it has stopped being usable. Here is the cycle, and how to apply into it.
An EWS certificate records that the family was below the thresholds for one financial year, and the finding is not carried forward. Once that year closes an institution reads it as spent, so apply into the year you will actually use it.
An EWS certificate records that the family was below the thresholds for a particular financial year. A household's income and holdings change, so the finding is not carried forward. Which is why the certificate names a year and why an institution reads it as spent once that year closes.
Work backwards from the admission or recruitment. If verification falls in the current financial year, the certificate has to be issued for that year, using the income of the year before. Applying in March for a July admission means applying twice.
EWS verification is the slowest of the four. The Lekhpal checks declared income against revenue records for land, flat and plot, and that takes longer than an income certificate's single figure. Allow 15 to 20 working days, and more during an admission season.
There is no renewal route. Each year is a new application with fresh declarations. Keep the previous year's certificate and application number: the declarations are easier to reproduce accurately when you can read what you declared last time.
