Which document to treat as the reference, what to correct first, and how to file while a correction is pending.
A one-letter difference between your Aadhaar and your ration card is enough to stall a certificate. Here is which document to treat as the reference, and what to correct first.
Treat Aadhaar as the reference and make the other documents agree with it, because verification is done against Aadhaar in practice. The exception is an Aadhaar record that is itself wrong, which has to be corrected first.
Verification is done against Aadhaar in practice, so the cheapest path is almost always to make the other documents agree with it: not the reverse. The exception is when the Aadhaar record itself is wrong, in which case correct that first and wait for the updated copy before filing anything else.
Fix the document the certificate application actually relies on. For a domicile application that is the address proof; for income it is whatever carries the income; for caste it is the family record. A marksheet with a mismatched name matters at the college counter, not at the Tehsil, so it can wait if the certificate is urgent.
Do not file mid-correction. An application filed while a correction is pending is verified against the old record and comes back. Wait for the corrected document, then file.
Where an old record genuinely cannot be changed (a deceased parent's name on a land record, for instance) an affidavit explaining the variance, filed with both documents, is the accepted route. Say plainly in the affidavit that the two names refer to the same person, and attach it with the application rather than waiting to be asked.
