What it is

Proof of the reservation category you belong to: SC, ST or OBC. It records the caste of your father or guardian and the category that follows from it, so the proof you rely on has to be in their name rather than your own.

Across Uttar Pradesh the same document is asked for as a jaati praman patra, or as an SC/ST/OBC certificate after the category it records. The name changes; the certificate and the Tehsil that issues it do not.

Who can apply

  • Applicants belonging to a Scheduled Caste listed for Uttar Pradesh
  • Applicants belonging to a Scheduled Tribe listed for UP
  • Applicants belonging to an Other Backward Class in the UP state list

What the Tehsil checks

The Lekhpal reports on your family's community, which is why a parent's certificate or a school record carrying the community is the strongest thing you can attach. Where no such record exists the Tehsil may run a local enquiry instead, and that takes longer.

How it works

  1. 1Confirm eligibility

We check your situation against the current departmental rules before you spend time on the form.

  2. 2Upload your documents

Once, from your phone or computer, or pulled straight from DigiLocker.

  3. 3We verify and file

Every field and document is checked, then a field agent files the application with the department.

  4. 4Track to delivery

Live status on every stage, and a verified digital copy by email once the department approves it.

Apply for Caste Certificate by district

The fee, the documents and the departmental rules are the same everywhere in Uttar Pradesh. Your district only decides which Tehsil verifies the application.

Apply for Caste Certificate by division

Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts sit under 18 divisions. Each one lists the districts inside it.

How long a Caste Certificate takes in Uttar Pradesh

  1. 0–7 days Filed and under review

We file it on the UP e-District portal, with every field checked first so nothing comes back.

  2. 8–15 days Tehsildar verification

A Lekhpal checks your address on the ground, then the Uttar Pradesh Tehsildar signs it.

  3. 15–20 days Certificate issued

The digital copy reaches your account, and the printed one is posted to Uttar Pradesh.

  4. Beyond 20 days Escalated for you

If it stalls, we chase the Tehsil ourselves and tell you exactly what it is waiting on.

Working days, counted from a complete filing. The processing time is the department’s own and is not a delivery commitment.

The most common rejection

Write the community exactly as the notified list spells it rather than the local variant. That one field is queried more often than anything else on the form.

Tips for faster approval in Uttar Pradesh

Six things that decide whether a file moves or comes back.

  1. Match every spelling to Aadhaar

The name, the father's name and the address have to read identically on every document you upload. A mismatch between the Aadhaar spelling and the ration card sends more applications back from the Uttar Pradesh Tehsil than any other single reason.

  2. File one address, not two

Whatever address the form carries is the one the Lekhpal verifies in Uttar Pradesh. If your documents show two, file with the one your residence proof carries and leave the other out.

  3. Scan the whole page, in daylight

A photo with a corner cut off or a shadow across the seal is rejected at the document stage, before the file reaches the department at all. JPG, PNG or PDF, up to 2 MB each.

  4. Answer the verification call

The Lekhpal calls the number on the form before the field visit in Uttar Pradesh. An unreachable number is the commonest reason a complete, correct file simply sits still.

  5. Get the Parshad signature first

The form has to be signed and stamped by the ward councillor for your address in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the few steps that still happens on paper, and it is easier to collect before the file is open than after.

  6. Submit on a working day

The department counts working days. A file submitted on a Friday evening effectively starts on Monday, which is two days of the estimate spent before anyone has opened it.

Common questions about the Caste Certificate

It is the only proof accepted for claiming reservation under the SC, ST or OBC category, in admissions, government recruitment, promotions and category-specific scholarships. Without it you are treated as general category for every one of these.

College and university admissions (including JEE, NEET and CUET counselling under reserved seats), central and state recruitment (UPSC, SSC, Railways, banks, UPPSC, UPSSSC, UP Police), post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC students, fee waivers, age and fee relaxation in exams, promotion reservation for SC/ST, and schemes run by the Social Welfare and Backward Class Welfare departments such as Shadi Anudaan.

Beyond seat and post reservation: UP Social Welfare post-matric and pre-matric scholarships for SC/ST, Backward Class Welfare scholarships for OBC, National Fellowship and overseas scholarships for SC/ST students, free coaching schemes, Ambedkar hostel admissions, higher loan subsidy under NSFDC/NBCFDC, and relaxed upper age limits in most government exams, typically 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC.

In your name, but it is based on your father's or paternal guardian's caste. That's why the proof you attach (his caste certificate, his school record showing caste, or a family member's certificate) must be in his name. Caste follows the father in UP; a mother's certificate is accepted only in specific cases such as a single mother raising the child, and usually needs an affidavit.

A UP OBC certificate proves you belong to a caste on the UP OBC list; it's what state jobs and UP institutions ask for. Central jobs and central institutions (UPSC, SSC, IITs, NEET all-India quota) ask for an OBC-NCL certificate in the central format, which additionally certifies your family is not in the 'creamy layer': parents not in Group A/B service, family income under ₹8 lakh from non-salary sources. CertiSetu currently files the UP-format Caste certificate only; the central OBC-NCL format is not offered yet.

SC and ST certificates in UP do not expire. OBC certificates are typically accepted for 3 years by UP departments; central bodies usually want an OBC-NCL certificate issued within the last year or in the relevant financial year, because the creamy-layer status can change.

Yes, but the Tehsil will verify more carefully. Alternatives accepted include a paternal grandfather's or uncle's certificate, a school leaving certificate of your father showing caste, a land record (khatauni) with the caste recorded, or an affidavit supported by the Gram Pradhan or councillor. Our agent will tell you which combination your Tehsil accepts before we file.

The list is state-specific. A UP certificate can only certify the category your caste holds in the UP list. If your family migrated to UP, the category is generally the one from the state of origin; in that case the certificate should come from there, and we'll tell you honestly if a UP application is likely to fail.

Applicant's Aadhaar and photo; father's or guardian's Aadhaar; father's caste proof (his certificate or an alternative listed above); a residence proof; and the self-declaration. Councillor or Pradhan attestation is arranged by our agent.

There is no fixed time. Caste verification can take longer than the others because the Tehsil checks the lineage proof. Our fee is ₹499, including 18% GST and the e-District charge.

Every certificate issued through the UP e-District portal carries an Application Number and a Certificate ID, and prints a QR code. Open edistrict.up.gov.in, choose the certificate verification option, enter those two numbers, and the portal shows the issued certificate. Anyone who asks you for the document, whether a college, an employer or a bank, can check it the same way. The Caste Certificate CertiSetu files for you is issued by the department itself, so it verifies exactly like one filed at the counter.

No. The documents listed on this page are what the application asks for, and Family ID is not among them. Family ID (Ek Parivar Ek Pahchan) is a separate Uttar Pradesh household identifier issued at familyid.up.gov.in; if your household already has a ration card, that ration card number serves as your Family ID. Several UP schemes ask for the Family ID and the certificate together, which is why the two get confused.
